I. Foreword from the Editor

The Fifth Fleet of Kul Tiras was among the island nation's most distinguished and decorated units after the end of the Third War. While many sailors and marines from Kul Tiras served directly under Lady Jaina Proudmoore in Theramore before and after the death of Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, the Fifth Fleet continued to serve under the banner of Kul Tiras itself due to the betrayal of Lady Proudmoore. The Fifth Fleet endured for over a decade of conflict against various threats without reinforcements from Kul Tiras, but upon sustaining crippling losses in Northrend, Kalimdor and the sinking of the last remaining flagship during the First Battle of the Broken Shore, the Fifth Fleet of Kul Tiras was disbanded and reorganized as the Fifth Marine Reconnaissance Brigade, composed of the remnants of the Fifth Fleet, 1st Marine Expeditionary Unit and shipwrecked Kul Tiras Sailors and Marines rescued from Queen Azshara's forces on the Broken Isles.

II. Commissioning and Construction of the Fifth Fleet

The Fifth Fleet of Kul Tiras was among several fleets commissioned by Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore when the civilized nations of Azeroth came together to form the Alliance of Lordaeron in order to meet the existential threat posed by the Horde invasion and subsequent destruction of Stormwind.

Shipyards in Boralus and Stormsong Valley began constructions of various types of ships utilizing rich mineral and timber deposits throughout Kul Tiras, including Oil Tankers, Landing Crafts and Battleships. Kul Tiran shipyards would also be retrofitted to facilitate the construction of Elven Destroyers by High Elf Shipwrights and Gnomish Submarines by Gnomish Engineers.

The first ships to be incorporated into this new fleet were the battleship KTS Silver Serpent, the destroyers KTS Twinkling Star and KTS Daelin's Light, and fast attack frigates KTS Undertow and KTS Blackhawk. Together with their respective support vessels and landing crafts, they would form the backbone of the Fifth Fleet of Kul Tiras. These would be accompanied by the gnomish submarines and elven destroyers constructed by the gnomish and elven allies who became so vital to the war effort.

III. Service During Second and Third Wars

The Fifth Fleet would form part of the task force against various assaults against Horde positions along the southern coasts of Lordaeron, Gilneas, Stromgarde, Khaz Modan and Azeroth, as well as the coasts of southern Quel'thalas. The naval engagements against the Horde would finally culminate in a decisive and crippling defeat against the Horde Navy with the destruction of their main fleet and shipyards in Crestfall - finally returning the territory to Kul Tiran possession and denying the Horde continued access to the seas. Though several of the fleet's support vessels and destroyers would be sunk by Horde fleets during this pivotal battle, the Fifth Fleet would survive the entire campaign and become both a source of fear for enemy fleet commanders, and a beacon of hope for Alliance captains.

After the Second War, the Fifth Fleet was turned against the Undead Scourge as the undead ravaged through Lordaeron, but the Scourge was unlike any foe the Fifth Fleet had battled before. Frost Wyrms would descend upon reconnaissance vessels, blasting the main decks with an unnatural frost breath that would instantly kill anyone topside. Main masts would turn into brittle, towering icicles, snapping like twigs with the force of the ocean winds and crippling the ship. The few who were able to be rescued by gnomish submarines returned with tales of sailors and marines who had fallen only seconds before returning to battle - but on the side of the enemy as the Liches and necromancers of the Scourge used their vile magics to re-animate the fallen as undead minions.

With many of it's ships lost in battle against the Undead, Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore re-assigned the fleet to rescue survivors and deliver them to safety. The Fifth Fleet concentrated on the evacuation of many civilians from Lordaeron, Quel'thalas and Stromgarde coasts while the Grand Admiral sailed his fleets across the seas to the West in search of his daughter Jaina and the large contingent of survivors she had rescued.

IV. Deployment After The Third War

Boralus High Command deployed the Fifth Fleet to Menethil Harbor and set up it's ground forces out of Ironforge to seek Justice for the death of Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore and to conduct anti-piracy operations which had sharply increased after the decimation of so many Alliance ships due to the wars.

The Kingdoms of Quel'thalas, Lordaeron and Stromgarde had fallen. Gilneas had isolated itself behind the Greymane Wall, isolating itself from the rest of the world. Dalaran had been destroyed by the Burning Legion, and the few surviving mages worked in secret beneath an impenetrable arcane dome. Tensions were high between Kul Tiras and the new Alliance organized by House Wrynn in the newly reconstructed capital of Stormwid. The new Alliance also included Night Elves - a mysterious race who had attacked the forces of Lord Admiral Daelin Proudmoore in Kalimdor when he was attempting to erradicate the nascent Horde before it could grow strong enough to pose a serious threat to humanity.

The original flagships of the fleet had survived the wars until now, but with many support vessels lost at sea (particularly against the Undead Scourge), the Fleet was weakened. The rest of the fleet had also suffered, with so many ships lost during the campaign in Kalimdor. Kul Tiras had requested aid from this new Alliance in avenging the death of Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, but they had refused - saying that the Grand Admiral's campaign in Kalimdor had been a war of aggression. Kul Tiras would withdraw back to it's shores, isolating itself from the rest of the world. At the same time, someone had to be tasked with sustaining some level of contact with the rest of humanity, but mostly to observe events in Stormwind, Ironforge and Gnomeregan while collecting information on the Night Elves and find a way of exacting justice on Kul Tiras' terms. A new period of distrust with this new Alliance had begun. While the new Alliance included traditional allies such as the Wrynn and Bronzebeard families, it also included the treacherous Daughter of the Seas, Lady Jaina Proudmoore as one of it's leaders, now ruling the city of Theramore atop her own father's grave.

V. Operation Longears

While the Fifth Fleet was under orders to maintain the appearance of a non-aggression stance with the Night Elves, those found to have directly contributed to the death of the Lord Admiral were hunted down and rounded up by Boralus Intelligence to be judged in military tribunals being run out of Ironforge.

The final resting place of dozens of Night Elf spies

It was no surprise to anyone who had been paying attention to the duplicity of the Night Elves that without exception these captives were found guilty and sent to Ironforge, where the Fifth Fleet planned it's incursions against the Forsaken in the Undercity. Being found guilty, these Night Elves were sentenced to death by fire, being tossed into the Great Forge at the heart of the city - much to the dismay of onlooking Night Elves who accused the Fifth Fleet of conducting a xenophobic witch hunt. In truth, many of the local dwarves agreed with the Marines' actions, having seen firsthand the duplicitous nature of many of these Night Elves - and relieved that dark elements had been cleansed from this newly established Alliance.

A great deal of information was also extracted from these Night Elf prisoners on Horde and Night Elf military positions and supply lines - information that would be valuable for sustaining the Fifth Fleet's efforts in Durotar. The elimination of so many enemies helped raise morale of the Marines stationed so far from home - seeing that the Grand Admiral's death would not go unpunished was a source of great pride for members of the Fifth Fleet.

VI. Fifth Fleet Offensives and Sinking of the KTS Daelin's Light

The Fifth Fleet assisted the Alliance in their assault against the threat of the Firelord Ragnaros and his Dark Iron minions in Blackrock Mountain. Soon thereafter, they were also deployed to the broken remnants of the world of Draenor, following in the footsteps of great heroes from years past such as Khadgar, Turalyon, Alleria Windrunner, Danath Trollbane and Kurdran Wildhammer. Following a successful campaign in Draenor, the Marines of the Fifth Fleet would continue their mission into Northrend to battle the Lich King and avenge the destruction of our brothers and sisters in Lordaeron.

The KTS Twinkling Star sunk off the Northern Coast of Northrend

Several of the Fifth Fleet's vessels were lost fighting the Undead, with many hands lost in the icy waters of the north. One such loss was a devastating defeat of the battleship KTS Daelin's Light under the command of Captain Glowenson, one of the heroes of the Fifth Fleet throughout the wars and a lead figure in the ground offensive against dark forces in Blackrock Mountain. As the KTS Daelin's Light and it's support vessels were hunting a fleet of Forsaken ships along the Northern coast of Northrend, a fleet of undead Vrykul under the command of the Lich King befell the flagship. Though the Kul Tiran vessels managed to sink most of the Vrykul vessels, a great undersea monstrosity was summoned forth by the Vrykul mystics, and managed to snap the mainail on the KTS Daelin's Light, pulling it down into the frigid deeps of the North Sea. Only a handful of survivors were able to survive the icy waters and climb the steep icy cliffs of Icecrown up to the Argent Crusade's base of operations.

Nevertheless, the Fifth Fleet would press on, and lend aid to the Argent Crusade in defeating the Lich King once and for all.

VII. The Cataclysm and disappearance of Kul Tiras

Shortly thereafter, the dread Earth Aspect Deathwing would resurface, shattering the land and seemingly pushing the island of Kul Tiras away - never to be seen again. Ocean currents had become erratic, and the blessings and guidance from the Tidesages of Stormsong Monastery had become silent. Many more of the Fifth Fleet's support vessels would be destroyed during the sundering and the resulting tidal waves that wrecked coastal settlements throughout the world - depleting the force even further. With fewer Marines at their disposal, the Fifth Fleet refocused it's efforts to hunting down and executing as many of the Twilight's Hammer cult as possible, helping to bring an end to their poisonous philosophy of death and destruction. Kul Tiras Marines also assisted the forces of Stormwind in an aerial assault against the dread Deathwing, bringing their unparalleled expertise in shipboard combat to the front.

Monstrous Tidal Waves in the Cataclysm claimed hundreds of ships worldwide

After the fall of Deathwing, the Fifth Fleet further depleted yet unreleting in their mission, sent a company of Marines to the newly discovered island of Pandaria, seeking any information as to what had become of Kul Tiras - to no avail. While there, the forces of the Horde under the leadership of Garosh Hellscream continued to bring destruction not only to the Alliance, but to their own. A company of Marines deployed with the rest of the Alliance to Orgimmar, laying siege to the cobbled together cluster of mud huts and spiked stone fortrifications, eager to complete the work started by Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore so many years prior.

By the end of the siege, the force of Marines had been further depleted and only the KTS Silver Serpent and KTS Twinkling Star surviving out of the original fleet. With no reinforcements from Kul Tiras available, and no new information on the fate of the island, they were unable to persuade the rest of the Alliance to finish off the Horde once and for all. Much to the Marines' surprise, the treacherous Lady Jaina Proudmoore had actually tried to persuade King Varian Wrynn to exterminate the Horde leadership once Garosh Hellscream had been captured - something the Stormwind Monarch declined to do. King Varian Wrynn simply made an empty threat to the Horde's leaders, but also failed to make any concrete demands for reparations for the Horde's wars of aggression in Kalimdor, Hillsbrad and Gilneas, nor did he demand they abandon the lands which they had annexed .

The characteristic weakness of conviction from Stormwind reminded the Marines why Kul Tiras had chosen to largely isolate itself from the Alliance, and why it was vital that they continue to perform their mission and bring destruction to the Horde.

VIII. Draenor Offensive

The remnants of the Fifth Fleet would continue their mission in aiding the Alliance, deploying to an alternate version of the World of Draenor in persuit of Garosh Hellscream, who would try to rebuid a new Horde to once again invade the world of Azeroth. Fifth Fleet Marines would lend their expertiese and assist the Alliance in hunting down and destroying the various Orc chieftains. The mission in Draenor would be a costly one, with only a handful of Marines left to continue the fight. With no word from home and no reinforcements forthcoming, the Marines of the Fifth Fleet would continue to follow their standing orders - no matter the cost.

IX. The Broken Isles Offensive and a New Hope

Most recently, the Marines of the Fifth Fleet would deploy to the Broken Islands in support of the great Alliance Armada which attempted to destroy the Legion forces on the Broken Shore. Both the KTS Silver Serpent and the KTS Twinkling Star were sunk during the battle, but a sizeable portion of their crews managed to escape to shore and continue the fight against the demon invaders. The Kul Tirans kept their distance from Horde vessels during the battle, not only out of respect for their Azerothian allies but also because they suspected the Horde intended to betray the naïve Stormwind leadership. In true Horde fashion, the dishonorable forces of the Horde retreated at a pivotal point in the battle, costing King Varian Wrynn his life. Some of the Kul Tiran survivors escaped the Legion counterattack by evacuating with the Azerothian forces, while others still circled the coast and cut through swaths of lesser demons while seeking shelter in order to regroup. Some of these Marines would make their way to Aszuna, where they would find a bittersweet surprise.

In Azsuna, the Marines would be surprised and elated to find brothers and sisters in arms - other Kul Tiras Sailors and Marines. The reunion was not what they would have expected, however, as these sailors and marines had been enslaved by the Naga and Sea Giants who had invaded the southern portion of the islands. The Marines of the Fifth Fleet would lay siege to the slave camp, liberating many of their brothers and sisters in-arms who would relate stories of long months at sea while searching for home, braving mighty storms and seeing ship after ship destroyed by large tentacled sea monsters, nightmarish maws with what seemed like thousands of bloodied, razor sharp teeth gaping open to devour the Kul Tiran fleets.

None of the rescued sailors and marines had any good news as to the fate of Kul Tiras - but seeing that there were others out there like them - those who had continued the mission despite being cut off from home reaffirmed to the remnants of the Fifth Fleet that the true bond of those who hailed from the island was that none of them would ever stop fighting - none of them would ever surrender.

The Fifth Fleet, now without ships to call their own, would assemble with some of the survivors found in Azsuna, and any survivors from the other dispersed units throughout Azeroth to form a new force to continue the fight. Without their ships to continue their original assignments, the leaders of the respective units decided it was time to re-focus their efforts into a cohesive ground mission to strike at the Horde using unconventional means.

Thus, the storied history of the Fifth Fleet of Kul Tiras came to an end, and the 5th Marine Reconnaissance Brigade was born.
