I. Foreword from the Editor

In this section we will be covering the Gnomes and the various Dwarven clans, their distinctive features and their relationship with the Alliance, with Kul Tiras and with each-other. Three of the dwarven clans originally lived together in peace and prosperity under High King Modimus Anvilmar in Ironforge until the War of the Three Hammers - which resulted in the exodus of the Wildhammer and Dark Iron clans from the city. They in turn established their own dwarven kingoms and continued to develop their own distinct cultures. They co-existed peacefully for the most part, until more recent conflicts which finally ended with the defeat of the Dark Iron Clan and re-unification of the clans under the Council of the Three Hammers. The Gnomes have lived in Khaz Modan alongside the Dwarves for a long time, but in recent history were forced to evacuate their capital of Gnomeregan after a cataclysmic Trogg invasion and subsequent use of radiation to try and combat the Troggs.

II. Origins

Much of what is now known about the Gnomes and Dwarves has only been recently discovered thanks to archaeological research conducted in ancient Titan facilities such as Uldaman, Uldum, and Ulduar.

Dwarves are derived from the Earthen, titanic creations made from living stone. The Earthen were originally made with the purpose of shaping the earth and underground - and so when these creations were afflicted with the so-called "Curse of Flesh", they were transformed into vicious Troggs - who were sealed away. A subsequent attempt at making Earthen which was also afflicted with the Curse of Flesh resulted in the Dwarves we see today - who retained the affinity for mining, tunneling, stoneworking and metalcraft of the Earthen.

The Gnomes are derived from mechanical constructs which were built by the Titans to assist in establishing Order on Azeroth and building the various technological miracles that are known as the Titan Facilities. These Mechagnomes, as they are now known, were eventually afflicted with the so-called "Curse of Flesh", transforming them from mechanical constructs into the living, breathing beings known as Gnomes today.

III. Anvilmar Clan

The Anvilmar family once ruled a unified Dwarven people from Ironforge until the War of the Three Hammers ended with the fragmentation of the Ironforge dwarves into three distinct clans: the Bronzebeards, the Wildhammers, and the Dark Irons.

High King Modimus Anvilmar was the last to rule all three clans, and is considered to have been a wise and just ruler. When he died of old age, his eldest son was due to be successor, however a civil war broke out between the three clans before this could happen. The resulting devestation on dwarven society broke the Anvilmar royal line - however the heir to the Anvilmar name was still allowed a seat on the Dwarf Senate.

IV. Bronzebeard Clan

aka "Mountain Dwarves"

The Bronzebeards have ruled Ironforge since the War of the Three Hammers resulted in the exodus of the other dwarf clans to other lands. During the Second War, their city came under siege by the Horde, but were able to keep the orcs from breaking their defenses until the Alliance of Lordaeron under the command of Sir Anduin Lothar attacked the Orcish siege from behind, allowing the dwarves to storm out of the gates and attack them from the front - utterly wiping out the Orc siege. King Magni Bronzebeard immediately threw his forces in with the Alliance, pledging to wipe out the Orcish threat, and his kingdom has been a stalwart supporter of the Alliance ever since.

The Bronzebeards also offered shelter to the Gnomes of Gnomeregan when the gnome capital was irradiated in a last ditch effort to repel a Trogg invasion - but the gnomes have since built New Tinkertown just outside the Gates of Gnomeregan and continue their work of reclaiming and de-contaminating their city from there.

A few years ago, King Magni Bronzebeard was afflicted with a curse within the Heart of Ironforge Mountain that transformed him into diamond. He was believed dead, but he re-awakened - his flesh and body still transformed into solid diamond, but now able to commune with the world soul of Azeroth - now referring to himself as "The Speaker". He advises the mortal races on behalf of the world soul of Azeroth while his brother Muradin Bronzebeard has taken up the throne of Ironforge and now rules alongside Moira Thaurissan and Falstad Wildhammer - representatives of the Dark Iron and Wildhammer Clans respectivelly, on the Council of the Three Hammers which is the new united governing body in both Ironforge and throughout the three Dwarven Kingdoms.

Physical Attributes:
Short, Stout, Resilient and Strong - the dwarves of Ironforge are the prototypical Dwarf that many of the other Alliance peoples know best. They are fierce fighters and highly skilled in both hand-to-hand, ranged and also in siege warfare. They thrive in almost any environment since they tend to construct expansive, awe-inspiring underground structures carved straight out of the rock which are both easily defended and provide protection from even the harshest of the elements. The dwarves typically have very large beards, massively muscular arms and powerful hands with which they have carved a kingdom from the insides of mountains throughout Khaz Modan.

Behavioral Traits:
The dwarves are a loud, uninhibited, jovial people, often spending much of their free time celebrating, drinking, and feasting with friends. The craft and consumption of all manners of ales, meads, stouts and other alcoholic brews are at the heart of Dwarven culture, along with their love of a good fight and the thrill of adventure. They're also Azeroth's most accomplished explorers, having uncovered much of the origins not only of their own people, but of Gnomes, Humans and the Vrykul thanks to their research into the Titans. Despite their gruff and boisterous demeanor, the dwarves are highly intelligent and capable craftsmen and inventors, designing and building some of the Alliance's most powerful war machines and siege engines. The Dwarves are often brave nearly to the point of recklessness, and have long memories which makes them fiercely loyal and protective of their friends and allies, but terrible adversaries to their enemies.

Weaknesses:
The dwarves can be a stubborn lot at times, either due to pride or because they're profoundly unwavering in standing up to their principles. It may at times take some effort to persuade a dwarf towards taking an unorthodox course of action which may go contrary to traditional doctrine - but it is often the case that in the end if their friends and allies mean to go with this new course, the loyal dwarves will see it through so as to not miss out on a good fight alongside their friends.

Conclusion:
Dwarves and Kul Tirans share a similar sense of adventure and loyalty that have drawn many of us in into service with the Kul Tiras Navy and Marines. Be confident when fighting alongside a Dwarf and know that they are some of the best among us - and that the Alliance is fortunate to have them in their midst. For Khaz Modan!
